The Benefits of Multi-Lingualism

An Asset for the Future

Bilingual children solidify a wonderful aptitude for language acquisition, meaning it’s easier to learn a third, even fourth, language.  It seems that once the mother tongue is entrenched as unilingual in the brain the acquisition of new concepts is impeded. In our increasingly globalized world these children will likely have more opportunities in their careers compared to their monolingual counterparts.

Adept Communication

Bilingual and trilingual children have greater communicative sensitivity and mental flexibility. They react quickly in situations where communication is key because they are used to rapidly deciding which language to use in a given situation. They also have a greater capacity for abstract reasoning that is independent of words.  This gives them an advantage in the construction of concepts and solving abstract problems.

A Force for Health
Bilingualism may delay the onset of age-related dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, by up to four years. Although scientists don’t know why bilingualism creates this “cognitive reserve,” some theorize that speaking two languages may increase blood and oxygen flow to the brain and keep nerve connections healthy—factors thought to help ward off dementia.
